About the Workshop:

Join us for a cozy, creative afternoon celebrating the beauty of Mexican folk art! In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to sculpt your very own Calaverita or Skull. Inspired by the traditional earthenware skulls made in Oaxaca, participants will learn the basics of handbuilding with clay, including sculpting, shaping, carving, and adding details to create your own unique calaverita.

No prior art or ceramics experience is needed! This workshop is beginner-friendly and perfect for anyone curious about folk art, symbolism, or simply reconnecting with their creativity.

What You’ll Create:

Each participant will be supplied with the tools needed to create their own skull taught by artist, Jerri Quiroz of Jerri’s Calaveritas. and learn how to shape, carve, and sculpt their own pieces.

Jerri will then guide you through the basics of handbuilding techniques, sharing tips, techniques, and ideas for making your piece truly personal. Whether you want to create a vibrant, traditional skull like those of Oaxaca or a modern, expressive version, this is your time to make it uniquely yours.

Once sculpted, your Calaveritas will be carefully glazed and fired by us. You’ll leave your piece at Luz y Tierra, and we’ll handle the rest! Glazing and firing takes about 4–6 weeks, and you’ll get an email or text when your finished piece is ready for pickup at Luz y Tierra.
